It's really annoying, I've literally hundreds of broken links in the broadband section. Doesn't help that BT mothballed all the early news and whitepapers either. *mutter*

BT business review (now broken link) includes the following extracts:

"Much of our current network investment is focused on the ways that technology can make our existing network investment carry all the latest services by - for example - delivering video services over the existing copper network. This will enable us to provide new services at the most affordable price.

BT is carrying out trials of ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber loop) technology, which uses compression techniques to increase the capacity of a phone line 30-fold, giving high-speed Internet access, TV-quality video and CD-quality audio.

Variants on this theme are also in development, including the highly economical DSL Lite and the more expensive VDSL.

SERIOUSLY worth a visit, especially for his white paper report.
"We're making an inventory of online (web accessible) manuals, guides, tutorials, articles and other discussions of ADSL "routers" and directly related topics. Documentation could be of any degree of generality or difficulty. Definitions and categorizations of the hardware/software are also sought. In particular, how do vendors and standards groups define "ADSL router"?
Also, we'd like references to specific protocol standards that the router equipment and software use. State-transition matrices from vendors or standards groups are especially valuable at this point.

Learn about the technology, the trends, specific telephony products, end-user and corporate solutions, and (quite a bit) more. I've yet to find a more comprehensive (and well designed) resource online."

Telecommunications Magazine, Steve Broadhead, April 30, 1999

The modem is not dead. This might be an obvious statement to make but it is contrary to the headlines of many articles over recent years. These headlines were usually written in relation to a competing technology, such as X.25 or ISDN, and the effects it would surely have on the modem's chances of survival. Yet -- thanks largely to the Internet -- the modem is still around and in larger numbers than ever. So what are the chances of yet another technology, DSL or digital subscriber line, eating into the market share of the modem?

Are vendors and service providers really positioning DSL as an ISDN or digital satellite alternative? Or is it simply another excuse not to lay more fibre in the ground? (Link to complete article dead)
