News and notes on the game, prior to it's release

If it wasn't for all the bugs I would have finished this game three times over. I have better things to do with my time than beta testing release problems!

  1. If you use a SBLive! card and enable the EAX you really should download the latest drivers. It's 24Mb in total, but there are a number of improvements beyond stopping the blue screen of death and deleted save games, although I still believe it still has unresolved bugs, specific to EAX enabled settings.
  2. If you multi-play TOTSC and experience problems, this is probably due to a DirectX conflict (as was the EAX fault above). Updating to DirectX 6.1a should sort this out. Incidentally, I believe DirectX 7.0 beta may be out in June.
  3. I'm currently seeing and hearing of a few other niggling things and possible (critical) bugs which I am looking into. I'll update on this in the next few days. As I know of a few people with similar errors, I shall list them. If anyone else has these same errors let me know and I'll give Interplay some grief.
  4. If you complete Durlags tower before Balduran's Island, Mendas disappears with the map - end of play!
  5. I also noted a lack of animation in the lower levels, but I haven't got an answer back on that yet.
  6. If you take the knife Soultaker back to Ulgoth's Beard, the Cultists attack and disappear, the Dwarf still wants his Grandma's knife. End of play!
  7. If you complete the Island before the tower you hit problems in the Tower. In AR0512 (with all the silly doors), the doppelgangers do not attack. If the door is opening and shutting constantly, then killing the "Durlag's" nets 400 exp points and full plate armour. If you stop the door bangings, they turn red, but don't attack anyway and you get 4,000 exp. Either way, the 2 doors to the rest of the area remain locked. - end of play! This latter bug is caused by the rune in the left hand corner of the bedroom.

The extract and link below is from Bioware.   Interplay, bless 'em - NOT - still insist TOTSC has no bugs. Yeh, right!

[ www.interplay.com/bgtales] Interplay - Tales of the Sword Coast

About TOSC:-
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (TSC) adventure pack for Baldur's Gate (BG). It is installed 'on top' of BG and adds new areas, items, characters, monsters, spells, and quests into the Sword Coast where Baldur's Gate takes place. The adventure pack can be installed while you are currently playing through the game, or it can be installed and played with a game saved after having beaten BG.

Tales of the Sword Coast is the first expansion set for Baldurs Gate, the game will be released in early Spring. It will introduce four new areas for you to explore and should add roughly 20 hours gameplay time. Depending on how much of BG1 you installed on to your hard drive the installation size should range from 5MB to 150MB.

Storyline and Continuation:-
Not much is known about the storyline and how it fits into the game, but rest assured Tales of the Sword Coast isn`t intended to be BG1`s Chapter 8 and to carry on after the final battle with Sarevok, all TOSC will do is add four new areas to the current Sword Coast map which you can explore before the final battle, this is the explanation from the Official TSC FAQ on the three different things that can happen after installing TOSC:

  • You start a new game: Everything is just like BG, with a bigger world and more stuff to do.
  • You continue a current game: After installation, you load your last save game. Everything will be the same as it was before TSC, but the world map is slightly different and bigger. You can continue with what you were doing before, or head off and investigate the new areas.
  • You want to play with the save game from when you beat BG: You will actually start just before the end of BG. You will have the opportunity to go out and investigate the TSC areas, and then come back and beat BG again.

Just to round a few things up, if you load up the final save game you will then start in one of the new areas called Ulgoth`s Beard and the only other change will be to do with the final battle, as your characters will be able to gain more levels due to a higher xp cap, the consequently the final battle with Sarevok and his minions will be more difficult.

Gameplay Improvements:-
OK so what type of improvements can we expect to see in TOSC, well Bioware are working on quite a few things, basically they took their list of suggestions for BG2 and tried to incorporate as many of them into TOSC as they possibly could, so here`s a list of known gameplay improvements:

  • In BG1 Thieves could basically backstab from anywhere, not anymore though the character will have to be behind (rightly so) to be able to backstab.
  • Whenever monsters are summoned they will all face in random directions.
  • Shadows will now play a part in whether your Thief will be able to successfully to hide in shadows, for example your will more likely be able to hide in shadows in a dungeon than in the open air in the early afternoon, unless of course you`re in the shadow of a building or something.
  • Character toolbars have been revised so most have 2 quick weapon slots -- the 3 that don't are: Cleric/Thief, Mage/Thief, Fighter/Mage/Thief.
  • The speed of all projectiles (normal and magical) has been doubled.
  • Web and Grease spells have been changed so they better reflect the area effect of the spells.
  • All area effect spells have been altered so they only affect people still within the area of effect (ie. you can now run out of the fireball blast radius).

I think most of this makes sense, most of the new additions to gameplay will add more realism to the game, and for example with the backstabbing from behind it will make some battles harder. Pretty much all of the above list makes sense and will make welcome additions to the way the game is played.

New Stuff:-
There will be plenty of new stuff to behold in TOSC, we`ll start off with new monsters, apparently there will be a few new monsters to pit your wits against, but not a great deal, most new monsters will be modified from base monsters used in BG1

There will be four new areas implemented into the Sword Coast map, one will be a small village town named Ulgoth`s Beard, and there will also be an island and a popular choice, Durlag`s Tower, each of these areas will apparently have plenty of interior and subterranean levels for you to explore.

As regards to new items there should be plenty to discover, only one definite inclusion so far is that of the Scimitar, although you could steal a magic one off of Drizzt Do`Urden before the patch was released, that was the only one in the game, but now they`ll be just as common as a Short Sword, apparently this weapon is included to balance the Druid`s hand to hand combat out a bit.

For all you spellcasters out there there will be new spells, roughly about 20 new 4th and 5th level spells for both Priests and Wizards, also included will be new higher level spells that NPC`s will be able to use against you (ouch).

NPC`s seems to be the next port of call, there will be roughly 100 new NPC`s and 20-30 of them will have major parts, unfortunately there will be no new NPC`s that can join the party. If you were wondering about any appearances from characters from the books like Drizzt Do`Urden and Elminster but unfortunately that gets a no no also.

Finally as regards to the multimedia aspect of the game, TOSC will have some new voice overs but probably only for the 20-30 major NPC`s. There will be new movie cutscenes included to further the story (this doesn`t mean TOSC is Chapter 8) and yes there will be new music to accompany the new areas and there respective moods.

XP Cap:-
Certainly from the fans viewpoint this has been the only thing to talk about , why might you ask? Basically because many people weren`t amused by the inclusion of an 89,000xp experience cap in BG1, so obviously the cap had to be raised for TSC, so for those of you who can`t wait any longer the new xp cap will be 161,000.

Whilst I was producing this summary I was going to have to research what this xp cap would mean to characters new levels that they could attain, thankfully Baldurs Gate Chronicles helped me with this and so here is a rundown of what levels you can now attain:

Class89,000161,000
Fighter 7 8
Ranger 7 8
Paladin 7 8
Cleric 7 8
Druid 8 10
Thief 8 10
Bard 8 10
Mage 7 9
Fighter/Thief 6/7 7/8
Fighter/Cleric 6/6 7/7
Fighter/Druid 6/7 7/8
Fighter/Mage 6/6 7/7
Fighter/Mage/Cleric 5/5/6 6/6/6
Fighter/Mage/Thief 5/5/6 6/6/7
Mage/Cleric 6/6 7/7
Mage/Thief 6/7 7/8
Cleric/Ranger 6/6 7/7
Thief/Cleric 6/7 7/8

Summary:-
So that's pretty much all the info we have as of today and I`m certainly excited about this expansion and its new 161,000 xp cap, as well as that though I like all the new gameplay improvements and new items, monsters and location can`t be a bad thing.

Well the Official Tales of the Sword Coast Page* has finally been updated by Ben Smedstad, here`s his post in full:
*(Though Interplay in now a fading memory)

"Tales of the Sword Coast is in full QA now. The bug lists are being passed around and the bugs are being killed. The voice over will be ready shortly and will be added along with the movies. These are the last things to add as far as content goes. It's coming together surprisingly well, and on time. You'd almost think that we've done this before Smiley Smile!

A lot of hoopla has been raised in reguards to XP cap limitations. For the record, the new XP cap for the mission pack will be 161,000 (I can almost hear the sound of countless Player's handbooks being opened. Smiley Smile! It was originally 151,000 but we've now decided to put it at 161,000 as this allows thieves to gain one extra level. XP beyond the 89,000 XP cap in BG1 will not be tracked in the mission pack, though if players hack their characters to allow increases in XP we will import the modified characters - i.e. we do not officially support character hacking but will import characters "as is" from the original game.

The reason we are limiting XP is quite simple. Gamebalance. We cannot design a game where the players could be at any level when they start. This is especially true when considering future BG products. The argument for passing along the XP above an XP cap is that players feel they earned that XP and they should be credited it, otherwise, the game is pointless because they got nothing out of it. They are right, to a point. If they import their character into future BG titles, and they are credited the XP, then that product is useless as they will be capped almost instantly making that product completely pointless. By passing the XP along the problem only gets worse and more difficult to deal with in the future. We are trying to make these games fun for everyone, and belive me, we have thought this stuff out. This does not mean that we don't want to hear the comments and questions. We like it when you force us to justify some of our decisions. It makes us think, and sometimes we are wrong, or forgot something.

So keep posting, and we'll keep answering.

Looks like the games coming along really well, certainly won`t be too long before get our grubby hands on it now, oh yeah and I do like the signature that includes "Baldurs Gate 2".

TSC Summary - Belgarion 1/3/99

Well this has come later than another pages (no I won`t tell Smiley Smile! effort, but due to the big info releases regarding TSC in the last week I`ve decided to write my own up to date summary of the upcoming expansion which you can find above. I hope you enjoy it, as well as this you can find the Official TSC FAQ below.

Recommended Links - Belgarion 28/2/99

Well finally I`ve added a recommended links page which includes all the official links as well as some recommended unofficial links with descriptions, which you can find on [ http://www.btinternet.com/~happy/bg2/ ] my site.

TOSC Unofficial - Belgarion 28/2/99

Baldurs Gate Chronicles has posted a whole page up for the upcoming expansion Tales of the Sword Coast, its a good read if you`re not very knowledgeable about news released lately, also even for people that are there is a nice table listed what levels your characters will be able to attain with the new 161,000 xp cap.

Newsgroup Bits - Belgarion 28/2/99

It seems that its a merry go round of information, first off we get loads of info from Greg Peterson and Ben Smedstad on the message boards, and then Ray Muzyka takes over and floods the newgroups, anyway here are a few more bits of info from the man himself. Now this is the third time someone has clarified what will happen when you first load up TOSC:

"When you install the expansion you can load any save you wish - whether it be the final save or any other - and continue playing in the game world. Once you have loaded this save, you will be able to play the new installed areas, but the final battle with Sarevok (which is the end of the game) will still need to be refought. It's being toughened up a bit for the expansion. The reason why the final battle (i.e. the end of the game) needs to be refought is that otherwise we would have to re-QA the entire game in a "post-final" battle chapter (in essence, a chapter 8) - which wasn't/isn't feasible - i.e. the amount of dialogue and resultant QA that would have to be added in would have delayed the release considerably."

Secondly people have suggested on the boards that when you import your party into BG2 (which HAS been clarified as an option) you will have your main character as usual but your party will be scattered and you`ll have to find them again, here`s what Ray had to say about that:

"This is the most likely method of implementation. It's all related to the way the story will unfold. We do want to give people the ability to find their cherished characters (fairly quickly), and this solution allows for this."

At least no one should be asking any more questions about where you carry on from once installing TOSC, as regards to the other idea I never expected the whole party to be able to be imported into BG2, but its definitely a great bonus for that to be able to happen, Belgarion`s legacy will carry on Smiley Smile!

XP Cap Clarified - Belgarion 28/2/99

Silverdawn from Baldurs Gate Chronicles received an e-mail from Ray Muzyka (Executive Producer) on the subject of the experience cap for TOSC:

"Non-hacked versions will play the game we designed - with the XP cap of 89,000 and the expansion started at the XP shown in the character record page (89,000 if they reached the cap, less than that if they didn't). Hacked characters will be imported "as is," with no attempt to either modify down the XP of the hacked characters, but no guarantee that they will work either. Installing the expansion will add new adventures and areas to explore which will allow you to continue to gain XP to 161,000."

A Day On the boards - Belgarion 27/2/99

The TOSC message boards have been given another nice tinge of official notice as there`s plenty of new info to supply to you today courtesy of Ben Smedstad (Producer) and Greg Peterson (Head of Marketing), the first subject on the agenda is how the final save game and continutiy into TOSC will work:

"The final save game, when loaded, will place you in Ulgoth's Beard. You technically will have NOT defeated Saravok. This means that you would have to fight him again to create another "final save" game to be importable to further BG products that would include you TOTSC XP. Saravok will have been make tougher to compensate for your higher level party, and to make it worth your while Smiley wink."

That was Ben`s input on the matter and now on to Greg`s:

"We have made a few changes to the start of the adventure pack, based on everyone's input. If you have NOT completed the game of Baldur's Gate, the installation of TSC will not impact your game play - i.e. you will pick up where you left off, however there will be new higher level areas to adventure in (once you find them). (Note: stay away from these areas until you are ready - you will die REALLY fast). If you HAVE finished the game of Baldur's Gate, the installation of the adventure pack will transport you to the village of "Ulgoth's Beard" where you will be able to start accessing the new areas immediately. If you return to Baldur's Gate, the game will pick up where you left it - with the exception that the final battle will still need to be fought (and it will be tougher the second time around). If you have already finished the game, the game state remains the way it was just prior to the final battle, however you will appear in the game world in the town of Ulgoth's Beard. What this means is that you can play through all of the additional areas without returning to Baldur's Gate, if you wish, or you can finish the new areas, and then return to Baldur's Gate for another round with the big guy. Again, this is only if you want to start with a save game from just prior to the final battle. If you desire, you could either start over, or start a save game that you have from a little bit PRIOR to the final battle..."

The next subject was regarding Thieves and their Backstabbing shenanigans:

"Backstabbing from behind was added for two reasons (that I can think of off the top of my head, there are probably more Smiley Smile! ) One, the thief backstab in BG1 was so powerful that some of the major battles were unbalanced because of it. Have you ever been backstabbed? Didn't think so. In the mission pack, NPCs will backstab, in BG1, they didn't. The second reason is that, well, it just made sense. We tweaked the "which way am I facing" code and we re-applied it to the thief backstab (as well as summoned monsters, random encounters, etc.) It is after all called a "back" stab. This is currently all being play tested. If it suck, we will change it. We will not put crap out, we want the best damn RPG out there( I say that a lot don't I ? Smiley Smile!) We are not about to drop the ball now."

And the Thieves hiding in shadows needed a bit of tweaking:

"With Tales of the Sword Coast, a thief's ability to hide in shadows and move silently (stealth mode) will be affected by the amount of shadows in his location. Expect that it will still be easy to creep around in dark dungeons, but forget that backstab in the middle of Beregost at noon (unless you are in the shadow of a building or statue, for example)."

Certainly something I didn`t expect was the ability to import your BG1 characters into BG2, but this seems to quash my theory:

"I can't say much about any other BG product out of the respect for the publisher, but when/if we do create a BG2, your main character will indeed be importable. This has been planned from the very start. Characters will be importable into future BG products from TOTSC and/or BG1. This makes balancing the beginning of future products a little more difficult, but I think we've got it covered Smiley Smile!"

A small bit of info was then released about the location of further BG products and the size of the expansion was clarified again:

"Future BG products will most likely take place in different locations (read: not BG). As to the 5 MB, thats the Install [size]; the actual size of the game is 1 full CD (and I mean FULL)."

Finally after all this mountain of information someone brought up the question of implementing AD&D modules into BG and here`s the answer to that:

"We all have our favorite TSR modules, but whenever the idea comes up about brining the modules to electronic life, there are significant challenges. First, most modules are too short to be free-standing computer games. Granted, a series of them might work, but you still have the problem of creating a campaign out of them. Singular modules like the "Tomb of Horrors" would be difficult without creating an entirely modular game system that would allow you to adventure between games at will. There are a LOT of design issues around modular RPG gaming (we have looked into this a fair amount) most of which have to do with game balancing, i.e. tailoring adventures to the abilities of the characters in the game.

Second, because modules are publically available (and most of them have been for quite some time) you are creating games that people already know the plotline for. Even if they don't know all of the details, they know the underlying surprises and story. This makes for a much less fulfilling gaming experience.

Third, because the game story and setting are established, it is difficult to get a development team to want to work on the project. When you think of it, it is a thankless task - taking someone else's pen and paper adventure and 'porting' it to the PC. No matter how well you do, someone else will always get a major share of the credit. Also, you will be creatively restrained in terms of what you can add to the product, how the characters and locations look, etc. It finally comes down to the question of priorities - if we had a free development team, would we rather have them working on an "Against the Giants" game, or Stonekeep2? The answer (at least for us) is pretty obvious."

Troubleshooting - Belgarion 27/2/99

Interplay`s Official Baldurs Gate Support Page has been updated with three new Q&A`s that are as follows:

Q: I left Minsc in AR5100 [Gnoll Stronghold] and now he attacks the party even though Dynaheir was saved?
A: This will only occur if Minsc is left in this area. You will want to make sure that he does not leave your party in this area (it's the one in the lower left hand corner of the map).

Q: I am attempting to defeat the Wyverns and the game continues to lock.
A: This should be address with the current patch [1.1.4315]. You may also simply run from them and the game will continue as normal.

Q: I have advanced to level 5 but I cannot enter Baldur's Gate. Did I miss something?
A: After slaying the chapter 4 boss, Davaeron, and submerging the mines (thus freeing the slaves), the PC is required to return to the surface world by means of an elevator. Inside the elevator is an invisible switch that triggers the beginning of chapter 5 and thus opens the entrance to Baldur's Gate. Upon further testing, it has been discovered that if a PC has haste cast on him and is ALSO wearing the boots of speed, he can actually trigger the map load switch before he triggers the Chapter load switch. Although this is not consistent, a few people may have accomplished this act. Thus, creating the illusion of a never ending chapter 4 and an unapproachable Baldur's Gate. The fix is easy enough, simply have the character return to the elevator and walk about SLOWLY.

Well I can`t say I`ve encountered any of these problems myself so there`s not much use me commenting on them, but I hope this helps you guys out that have encountered these problems.

Board Bits - Belgarion 26/2/99

A few more tid-bits surfaced on the Tales of the Sword Coast message boards which I couldn`t find but anyway the below mentioned site helped me out on this one, answers here were from Ben Smedstad (Producer for TOSC) and Greg Peterson (Head of Marketing), the first bit is about the expansions installation size:

"The install size for the mission pack is not final yet, but, if you did the recommended install (or larger) then the TOTSC install will be quite small. Probably under 5 megs. This may change (for the smaller) after we finalize the install (usually one of the last steps). If you did a minimum install, it will be closer to 150 megs."

Then on to how the final battle will be modified after installing TOSC:

"Yes, the final battle changes slightly if you install the mission pack. It will be tweaked for the higher level player."

And the best news so far is about new weapons, items and classes being implemented:

"There will be no new classes in TOTSC. There will be in future BG products. Yes, there is a new weapon out there in TOTSC. The scimitar is now out there for people to play with. We felt that the druid really needed a boost, so, we added the weapon. Yes, there are more items for you to find in TOTSC. Actually there are quite a few new items 70+."

Tip Central - Belgarion 26/2/99

The ever hard working Jonric from the Vault Network has just posted 15 tips courtesy of Ray Muzyka, who collected them from various Bioware staff, plus one exclusive Smiley Smile! from Jonric himself. I`ve read through them and some of them are pretty good and worth a look, especially if you have trouble in battle as most of the tips are there to help you out in that area, so if you`re interested go to the vaultnetwork [link dead].

Future Plans - Belgarion 26/2/99

[ Next Generation Online ] has just released an article, with Ray Muzyka commenting about Bioware`s future plans and a couple they wished to have implememented into BG1, here`s the small article:

"We're working on an Online RPG that out of courtesy to our publisher, Black Isle/Interplay, I can't discuss at present, until we release a joint press release later this year," Muzyka informed.

There are a couple of things we wished we had been able to implement. One is the ability to record notes on the map; another is the ability to flag completed quests and write notes in the journal.

There are a number of other things that we've identified in the past few months but none were ever planned to go into Baldur's Gate - instead they are the features that we plan to add to the sequel. Some have been already added into the Sword Coast expansion; we put in as many of the features off of the Baldur's Gate 2 list into the mission pack that we could."

Looks like we may be in luck with some brand spanking new features for TOSC, will they include the two suggestions in paragraph two? We`ll just have to wait and see.

161,000 Cap - Belgarion 26/2/99

Well it seems that the 151,000 xp cap that was stated yesterday isn`t correct, in fact the real cap is even higher, now at 161,000. I suppose this can only be a bonus, especially for dual and multi-classed characters I should imagine. Thanks go to, you guessed it Baldurs Gate Chronicles for this tip off.

Expansion Tid-Bits - Belgarion 26/2/99

Ray Muzyka has once again posted some thoughts about the expansion in the newsgroups, no I don`t scour the newsgroups so thanks go to Baldurs Gate Chronicles for this tip off, anyway here`s what he had to say:

"It's intended as an expansion to allow balanced higher level character advancement and adventure, not as a "marketing pack." There is of course marketing benefit to the original game, but I imagine this is true of almost any expansion...

We're adding new areas: Durlag's Tower as well as an island off of the coast, plus a couple of smaller areas and a small town. None of these areas was intended in any way for the original game and all are intended for levels 7-9 characters (XP cap 151,000). We also have done as many programming feature improvements as we possibly can in the time since the original game was released - i.e. we looked at the feature list for BG2 (now quite extensive) and picked off all of the ones we could in the past three months - we did quite a few things to improve the game actually, all of which will be listed in the readme for the expansion. The expansion is entirely optional, and is intended to allow people to continue to play the game while we're working on the sequel."

Version 1.0 - 02/03/99 Chris Parker. Edits by Ben Smedstad

What is Tales of the Sword Coast?

"Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (TSC) adventure pack for Baldur's Gate (BG). It is installed 'on top' of BG and adds new areas, items, characters, monsters, spells, and quests into the Sword Coast where Baldur's Gate takes place. The adventure pack can be installed while you are currently playing through the game, or it can be installed and played with a game saved after having beaten BG."

How does the adventure pack use my characters?

"The adventure pack will simply add areas into the currently existing world. That is, the world map will be replaced with a new world map with areas on it that weren't in BG. With the adventure pack, you will still be playing BG, it will just have a bigger world.
So there are 3 things that can happen:

  • You start a new game: Everything is just like BG, with a bigger world and more stuff to do.
  • You continue a current game: After installation, you load your last save game. Everything will be the same as it was before TSC, but the world map is slightly different and bigger. You can continue with what you were doing before, or head off and investigate the new areas.
  • You want to play with the save game from when you beat BG: You will actually start just before the end of BG. You will have the opportunity to go out and investigate the TSC areas, and then come back and beat BG again.

If you beat BG with the adventure pack installed, the game will end as it would without it.

How much gameplay time and space is added?

"There are 4 areas that are being added to the Sword Coast. There is a small town called Ulgoth's Beard, an Island, and the famed Durlag's Tower. All of these areas are complex, having multiple interiors and subterranean levels. Our estimation is that the adventure pack will add roughly 20 hours of gameplay into the world."

Where does the adventure pack take place?

"The adventure pack takes place on the Sword Coast in the exact same region as BG. Part of TSC takes place to the west of the city of BG (on the high seas) and some takes place near the Wood of Sharp Teeth."

Is the adventure pack actually Chapter 8 of the story from BG?

"No, in fact, the adventure pack cannot be played after BG proper has been beaten. TSC adds areas directly into the BG game world to be played as a part of BG."

Are you planning on modifying any of the rules from BG?

"No, not the rules, but there will be some changes to game mechanics. The majority of these things came from feedback directly from the message boards:"

  • Character toolbars have been revised so most have 2 quick weapon slots -- the 3 that don't are: Cleric/Thief, Mage/Thief, Fighter/Mage/Thief.
  • The speed of all projectiles (normal and magical) has been doubled.
  • Backstabbing now requires the thief to be behind the target.
  • Web and Grease spells have been changed so they better reflect the area effect of the spells.
  • All area effect spells have been altered so they only affect people still within the area of effect (ie. you can now run out of the fireball blast radius).
  • Summoned creatures now start facing random directions.

How will multiplayer work for the adventure pack?

"Multiplayer will work exactly the same in TSC as it does in BG. If you have installed the adventure pack however, you will only be able to play with others who have it too. This is because game data has to be the same on all machines and TSC will be modifying some existing BG data when it installs.

What will happen to the experience point cap?

"It's going up. We haven't exactly decided what the new experience point cap is going to be however. In BG the cap was 89,000, this allowed characters to attain 7th or 8th level depending on their class. In our discussions it seems pretty well agreed upon that the cap will allow characters to get up into the 8/9th level range in TSC.

There are ways to modify the experience point cap in the game currently available on the internet. If you do in some way modify Baldur's Gate, you may make it impossible for your characters or your game to port to the adventure pack or any possible sequels. At the very least, your characters will be brought back down to 89k xp."

Are there going to be new items?

"There are going to be a lot of new items, but most of the items will exist within the same broad categories as the items from BG. As we get closer to the release of the project, we will make a smaller version of the Faerun Querum with pictures and descriptions of some of the new items.

Are there going to be new monsters?

"There will be some new monsters, but not a ton. We think there'll definitely be enough to keep you satisfied. Of the new monsters, only a few will actually be created from scratch with new models, animations, and all that. There will be new variations on many of the existing creatures in BG.

Are there going to be new spells?

"We will be adding a number of spells from the 4th and 5th level for both Priests and Mages. The number will not be huge however, somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 spells or about 1/5th of the spells in BG. There will likely be some new higher level spells, but unfortunately for the players, those spells will be used against you by NPCs."

How many new NPCs are there?

"There will be a lot of NPCs. As it stands there will likely be a hundred with 20-30 major parts.

Are there any more characters from the books?

"No."

Will there be a lot of new Voice Overs (VO)?

"There will be new VO, but not a huge amount. The amount of VO per character will be roughly equivalent to the amount of VO that is currently in BG per character and it is likely to be for the major NPCs only."

Will there be new movies?

"Yes there are several pre-rendered cutscenes in TSC. They are placed as such to further the story and to immerse the player further into the game."

Will there be new music?

"We might do a small amount of new music, but it would be relatively brief and is likely to be very location specific."

Will any of the NPCs be able to join my party?

"There will not be any new NPCs to join your party in TSC."

How big is the installation going to be?

"You must have BG installed in order to install TSC, but the adventure pack will only make a number of small modifications to your current installation. That is, if you choose a minimum installation where all of the SFX and music stay on the CD, then the adventure pack will be roughly equivalent to patching BG, less than 5 megs. If you choose to do a regular installation, the size will depend entirely upon the amount of new assets in sound and animations that we add into the game. It is likely to be less than 50 megs however.

If I uninstall BG, will I still be able to use my characters in the adventure pack?

"You must have BG installed in order to play the adventure pack because it adds into the currently existing world. If you choose to uninstall BG until the adventure pack is released, keep your save games folder backed up someplace. There are two of them '\saves' and '\mp saves'. After you get the adventure pack, reinstall BG and then install the add pack. By copying over your saves at that point, you could resume where you left off.

Will the system specs change for the adventure pack?

"There will be no change to the system specs for TSC."

Will I be able to use my 3d hardware acceleration with the adventure pack?

"No, not yet. As it stands, 3d implementation will only happen if there is a sequel. We want to do it right, and to give the player the full potential of the 3d support, not just some hack to get it working."

Will the German/French/Italian/Spanish versions be done at the same time as the English?

"We're going to do the best we can. BG shipped out in the US on the 12/23/98, in the rest of the world it took around one or two weeks to arrive on the shelves. The reasons for this were primarily logistical. BG has 5 CDs (which means it takes a long time to duplicate and build units) and it silvered on what is probably the worst week in the entire year to try and get something done. Since TSC is only one CD, and since its not shipping in the middle of Christmas, we may be able to turn it around faster. However, because we are developing the adventure pack very quickly, we may not have time to produce all of the localized materials such as the box and manual fast enough. So there are a number of factors at play and all we can say is that we'll do the best we can."

Will there be other adventure packs?

"Maybe".

When is it going to be released?

"Spring '99"
