As far as I'm aware it's still in development. Long before then we'll see the MMRPG's 'World of Warcraft' and 'Warhammer Online'.

Tolkien fans can start slavering NOW - cue intro, roll...
J.R.R. Tolkein's classic series of fantasy novels - The Hobbit - Lord of the Rings -
is being turned into an Online RPG by
Yosemite Entertainment.
The world in which these novels take place is called Middle-Earth, and plans are being made
to make a massive online RPG of the same name, based on that setting.
The game, to be set in the 4th age, will allow up to 10,000 users at a time (with allowances
for additional servers at another 10,000 at a time) and will run true to the spirit of the
books. Release is slated for summer of 2000 and I can't wait!
