Aeantha Players FAQ

Arantha MUD arantha.com port: 4000

We recommend Arantha MUD arantha.com port: 4000 (currently Alpha testing)

This FAQ, like the MUD itself, is still in Alpha. As such the vast majority of the commands below are not implemented and some that are with be changed. However, as soon as any changes or new commands become available I will update the FAQ to reflect this.

FAQ Last updated on or after : 24th September 2004

Builders may be happy to note there are FAQ's for them in a secure area. See Shaz and company for the details.

Players will be pleased to note that be have some magic spells and these are being added too all the time. All being well skills, NWP's and other desireables will all start going go in this month (Sept 2004), subject to the usual bug-hunting Big grin!

Accounts are also in, for added security, management and far less need for (code related) pwipes

Note:

Commands highlighted like this are not available at the present time!

This FAQ will get a massive overhaul when we go to beta and again when we are live, but feel free to report any and all typos, errors and anomalies anyway.

This returns your account details, hours played etc.

A/C - ARMOUR CLASS
Just how much protection your skills, magic and armour gives you.
For example, a dexterity of 18 will increase your A/C from 10 to 6 (less is more!)
A ring of protection +1 (if these ever get created in the game…) takes it from 6 to 5
And the spells "armor" or "barkskin" would take it to -1 or better.
Alternatively, full plate armour give your A/C 2 as a starting point…

Armour and Arantha:
Thanks to a dedicated team, and especially Ryan's input, this is incredibly detailed and will be as realistic as we can make it in the setting…

Armour and indeed all clothes have full and partial coverage by location; thus a bracer will partly cover a forearm, while a chainmail shirt would cover all the arm. Wrist and hand are separate items for this.
Also, AC is calculated to 2 decimal places.

Incidentally, when the code goes in, battle, spells and other conditions will damage and destroy armour, though the armourers NWP will let you repair it with the right tools.

There WILL be an Armourers proficiency - I'm possibly coding it myself, time allowing Smiley Smile!

[Δ]

AFFECT
This command shows only the spells affecting you.
This is useful if typing the score command, when having a lot of spell affects on you, causes important information to scroll off of the screen.
The autoaffect command will keep the affect information from showing up on the score. Type auto for a status.

[Δ]

AFK

Usage:   AFK

Toggles adding [AFK] to your title for when you disappear for the phone etc.
i.e.
Rhesus the young adventurer [AFK]

[Δ]

ANSI

Usage:   Ansi

Toggles ANSI colour on and off.

[Δ]

ANSWER

Usage:  Answer  (give answer)

Example:
Answer The official website is Arantha.com

Part of the Q/A channel

See also: Question Channel

[Δ]

APG's or Arantha Player Guides

Usage:   APG  message

Example:
APG Help, I don't know how to sheath a sword

APG's will be the players who help out newbies, field questions, and act as the go-betweens between staff and players. For those of you who played Faerun they'll be much like the FSC. Players will be able to contact them through a special channel that only APG players and the Imms will see.

Any player may use the APG channel, but only the character entering the message, APG's and Imm's can see the message.

This command may be updated again before we go live

[Δ]

APPRAISE
See Gem Appraisal proficiency, below.

[Δ]

APPROVAL ~ IMPORTANT: The approval system in not decided yet!

The system here is based on the one used in the Faerun MUD. This is merely a vague guide until Arantha's system is chosen.

Once you reach level (three) you must be approved to progress any further. How well you play your character and how well you write your approval decides this.

NOTE: You cannot be approved without an accepted BACKGROUND

Here are some rough guidelines. You need (65) Yes votes, the more people you know (in your database) and the your people you roleplay with, the easier it is to get these votes. A "yes" off an Immortal counts as (5) votes…

The more you play Out Of Character, the more "no" votes you get, and visa versa. Thus, even for a thief, if you keep robbing temples, no-one will vote for you (and you could get banned from the MUD). Similarly, if you are a Ranger or Paladin and go around attacking animals (for experience) this is hardly in-character. If an Immortal sees / hears of this you could also find yourself downgraded to a Fighter class.

For the approval, it must say IN CHARACTER, why you want to go up a level. What have you done since the last time you gained a level, who have you done it with, why have you done it. Writing "because I want my thac0 to increase" or similarly OOC worded sentences will get you laughed at!   Read the other approvals up for voting - which you should anyway - (and look at the examples on the web-site for inspiration if you are stuck for ideas.)

"It is your DUTY as a player on Arantha to vote on your fellow player's approvals! Your vote does matter, do your part to improve the roleplay on Arantha today! Remember, if you vote no you probably should send a note to the player informing him/her what to do to improve."

Roleplaying "The best way to advance on Arantha is to be a good roleplayer. This is even more important than experience points and becoming better at skills. If you can project the image of the toughest and most skillful fighter in the Realms, you will be thought of as such, no matter just how well you can fight or how good you are with that long sword. That way when you go and try to get your character approved for the next level, everyone will know who you are and hopefully vote for you. Also roleplaying is what makes playing on Arantha fun."

Thought for you - Approvals telling of the life experiences are more likely to be voted for than an account of how you single handedly dispatch that Goblin…

[Δ]

ARMOUR CLASS
see A/C, above

[Δ]

ASSIGN
Used to assign or distribute thieves skills. See TRAIN for a full account.
To be honest, I'm not sure if Assign is valid any longer, so best to stick with LEARN

[Δ]

AUTO…
Note, many of these are common on other MUDS and may or may now be used here.
Uses varies, but they offer automatic actions. The commands are as follows:

autolist : list all automatic actions
autoloot : take all equipment from dead mobiles. OBSOLETE
autogold : take all gold from dead mobiles OBSOLETE
autosac : sacrifice dead monsters (if autoloot is on, only empty corpses) OBSOLETE
autoexit : display room exits upon entering a room
autosplit : split up spoils from combat among your group members OBSOLETE
autoassist : makes you help group members in combat

Typing a command sets the action (except for autolist), typing it again removes it.

[Δ]

AUTOEXIT

Usage:   Autoexit

Toggles room exits on and off.
The default is on and, really, should be left on!

B…

[Δ]

BACKGROUND - NOTE: Like approval this has not been decided. It is however lightly.
VERY IMPORTANT THIS
"Newbies" have until their 30th hour to submit and approval, the more experienced have until their 15th hour. You need your background approved to gain experience points after a certain point.

This is (at least) a page describing your character. Who is he (she / it). Why is he the class he is. What changes occurred in his life to become the fighter / adventurer / thief he is now. What moulded him.

Use this to breath life into your character, make him believable, both for yourself and for the other you play with. Have a look at the backgrounds on the web-site for guidelines or inspiration. My own first background, while very well written, was rejected because it left a number of crucial questions unanswered. When I expanded it to explain the gaps (keeping the original intact) I was approved almost the same day.

[Δ]

BACKSTAB
Thieving skill - backstab target   ie   backstab Hobgoblin
Not (yet) sure on the mechanics, but generally involves HIDE in shadows and QUIETly sneaking up behind something

Note also that you can only backstab humanoids. Ogres and Goblins OK, but a Wyvern or a Frog, nope…

[Δ]

BANDAGE
Healing proficiency, used by applying CLOTH to a cut or wound
"This proficiency allows a player to heal another player who has lost hit points to the point of negative numbers. Once a player reaches -4 hp, they are dead and cannot be bandaged. In order to use this proficiency, you must have strips of cloth which you can get by ripping or tearing clothing.
You may then attempt to bandage a player. If successful, this will bring them back up to 1 hp.
The commands are:
    rip   object
and
    bandage   player   cloth

[Δ]

BANK
Where you can store your money. This is recommended, if only to leave a percentage of your money in.

NOTE: If a bank account is inactive for 30* (real life) days, it is deleted. (*I believe). The help support warns that IF it gets robbed, you lose big time. Naturally, keep your account number to yourself!

Sooo, it is important to that you remember to make a transaction at least every 25 days. After 30, it will get closed.
NOTE: Learning the balance does not count. You must withdraw or deposit money into it / them.

As an addenda, banks DO get robbed! SOBS! I lost over 1,500gp one time, 3,000 another…
It's a random event that's programmed in and you are sent a note (automatically?) if this happens. I grumbled like merry hell (in character) but it's part of the game.

I now have several bank accounts and divide any monies between them equally.

Anyway, the commands for the bank are:

bank new to open a new bank account

bank deposit   account number   Amount   coin type

bank withdraw   account number   Amount   coin type

bank balance   account number

Example:   deposit   xab123-75-vgtye3   75   gold

There's also bank exchange coin   amount   coin.
This is useful as occasionally you will find situations where over copper or silver will do or platinum won't do or when you want to take a lot of money.

Coins have weight.   1000 copper are about 30lb, 2 Platinum are negligible

[Δ]

BLIND FIGHTING
The blind fighting proficiency allows your character to have a better chance of hitting his or her target when in combat and blinded or in darkness. Wherever your character becomes blinded or attempts to fight in the darkness you have a greater chance of missing your intended target or opponent. With this proficiency your character will have a better chance of finding his/her opponent or target in the fight. Fighting in darkness or blinded is the only way to increase your skill with this proficiency.

I suspect this isn't needed if you have Infra vision - ie it's a human thing…

[Δ]

BONE
used to fix/assign a weapon to a sheath. SEE SHEATH FOR A FULL EXPLANATION

type bone sheath after you set your sheath to draw primary or secondary or backup

[Δ]

BORN room

Usage:  Born

Born is used to reset your starting room - the place you wake up when you've died and reborn.

This room must be a 'chat' room that you can distinguish by the Born to the right of the room title.
ie
      Sailor's Hook Grand Hall [Size: 35 45 15] [BORN]

A players 'born' room is the room to which the player goes when they rise after deaths.

Whenever you move to a new area, consider - remember - to use this command. It might prove frustrating to die in a land far, far away and be reborn in Medyllar… Where's the Born room?

[Δ]

BRANDISH - ZAP

This command will probably be removed from the FAQ, it is unlikely ti be used.

BRANDISH brandishes a magical staff.
ZAP fires a magical wand at a target.
If the target is not specified, and you are fighting someone, then that character is used for a target.

You must HOLD a wand or a staff before using BRANDISH or ZAP.

Brandish
Zap
Zap   target

All of these commands use up their objects. Potions and scrolls have a single charge. Wands and staves have multiple charges. When a magical object has no more charges, it will be consumed.

"(These commands may require an item skill to be successful, see the help entries on the skills scrolls, staves, and wands for more information.)"

[Δ]

BRIEF

Usage:   Brief

Example:
Pat Exaar

Activates / de-actives brief descriptions.
Basically, without it, you have little or no idea which 'room' you are in, though you should know the area.

[Δ]

BUGS

Usage:   Bug  (report bug)

Example:
bug the entire game crashes when I type 'put bag in bag'

At present we are still in Alpha testing so we are finding interesting bugs as Arantha is developed. Really though, bugs should be reported on the boards.

Once we are live, however, if you find one and exploit it, your arse if grass as the saying goes and you will get caught and likely banned. If you're not sure, ask.

See also Idea and especially Typo

[Δ]

BUILDING - your own place

Look under ROOMS

[Δ]

BUTCHER
Hunting proficiency used to carve up animals into (hopefully) edible joints. If you are unskilled, you could poison yourself!

"This prof allows a player to cut up the corpse of a kill into edible steaks. The amount of steaks the player makes depends on the size of the corpse and the players skill in butchering. Butchering a Bat will get you nothing, but a Dragon could feed you for quite a long time."

NOTE: (Butchered) meat spoils very quickly so unless you want to poison yourself, your and your party should eat the steaks as soon as they are cut. There is no "cookery" skill as yet, but if you roleplay making a fire and cooking the meat, so much the better.

[Δ]

BUY

Usage:   Buy  ( # | item name keyword )

Example:
buy 3
buy shiny (a shiny steel scimitar with a golden eagle pommel)
buy scimitar
buy eagle

BUY
Naturally, lets you buy things. The price will be relative to location, rarity and your charisma.

Shop are just going in now (September 2004) and many aren't set up yet. I'll revise this entry shortly when the store are reliably open.

CALENDAR : Arantha Calendar

Sersha - Beginning of summer.
Sernav - End of summer
Ursha - Beginning of fall
Urnav - End of fall
Malensha - Beginning of winter
Malenav - End of winter
Arrisha - Beginning of spring
Arrinav - End of spring

The calendar is a lunar one, based on the movements of the largest of Arantha's two moons. The Shar call this larger moon Ersta. It is a little smaller then our own moon and takes 48 days to circle the planet. Ersta also dictates the tides of the world. The closer and smaller moon is named Nachtos and this is full every 16 days.

The naming conventions of the Shar calendar are relatively simplistic. The Shar months have either one of two post-fixes: "Sha", meaning new, and "Nav", meaning end. "Ser'Sha", would then be translated to "New Summer," the first month of the year, while "Sher'nav" means "Summers End." As with most ancient Shar names, the apostrophe is generally dropped in contemporary usage.

The year is approximately 384 days long and it is divided up into 8 months
There is one season for every two months and each month has 48 days.

[Δ]

CAST

Usage:   Cast  ( spell | 'spell name' )   target

Example:
cast flame Ogre
Cast 'flame arrow' Ogre

At present spells are nascent, though I doubt 'mana' will be used.

'Cast' applies equally to Clerics and Mages and will also apply to the planned Dwarven Rune magic when it goes in.

The target is optional. Many spells which need targets will use an appropriate default target, especially during combat.

If the spell name is more than one word, then you must quote the spell name.
Quoting is optional for single-word spells. You can abbreviate the spell name.

When you cast an offensive spell, the victim usually gets a saving throw. The effect of the spell is reduced or eliminated if the victim makes the saving throw successfully.

See also SPELLS   and RELIGION

[Δ]

CHANGE

Use to change coins. See BANKS

Also used to change channel for notes and such…

[Δ]

CHANNELS

APG - Used to ask for help. The equivalent for the FSC if you remember it.
ANSWER - For answering "Questions"
HELP - For requesting support at the account loggging in stage.
NPC - Speaking to mobs and npc's can be seen by Imm's (that have NPC enabled)
OOC - Out Of Character chat
QUESTION - For asking questions - see "Answer" above
REPLY - Reply to a tell
TELL - Send an OOC message to a player in your database

[Δ]

CHOP
Used to chop down trees/bushes and to chop those items into logs.
The player must have an axe and be wielding it in order for this command to work. The size of the tree/bush will determine how strong you must be to chop it down. Each time you chop a log it splits it in half.
The command format is: chop object name. I.e. chop oak or chop log or chop 2.log.

This command can also be used to chop bark off of a log. (Used as a spell component)
The command for this is chop de-bark log or chop de-bark 2.log for a different log.
Remember that if you take the bark off of a log that is too big you will be unable to carry it and if you select a log that is too small, the bark may be too little to be usable.

[Δ]

CLASSES

Note, this is a list of accepted skills, proficiencies. Many have yet to be coded and some may never be implimented. Before we go live I will make a list of all the working effects.

[Δ]

CLIMB

Usage:   Climb  direction object

Example:
Climb up tree
Climb down pit

A new command, subject to change.

A skill native to thieves and bards.
As yet it is not available as a proficiency, but anyone can climb…

Having lost 5-80+ HP falling off various cliffs (elsewhere), dying from a fall is a very real possibility.   Naturally, the higher you climb, the harder the fall…

Dexterity bonuses will apply though, naturally, the more weigh you carry the more likely you should be to slip…

[Δ]

CLOAKS - PUTTING THE HOOD UP

I've seen this question appear a few times and have decided to include it for completeness:
A male half-elf questions 'what is the command to put the hood of cloak on one's head?'

A female half-elf answers 'wear cloak hood'

[Δ]

CLOSE / OPEN

Usage:   Close  target

Example:
Close east
Close chest

Used to close doors, chests, backpacks etc. Naturally use Open instead to open things

[Δ]

COACHES

It seems very likely we won't use coaches here.

[Δ]

COLOUR CODES
Colours on Arantha can go a long way towards making your character more your own. You may want to make part of your long description stand out by changing the colour or you may want your title to be in a colour that reflects your religious affiliation. To add colour to these items and more, you must use the colour codes listed below.

^W   …   bright white
^w   …   off white / light grey
^D   …   dark grey
^d   …   black
^Y   …   bright yellow
^y   …   dark yellow / light brown
^C   …   bright cyan
^c   …   dark cyan
^M   …   bright magmenta
^m   …   dark magmenta / purple
^R   …   bright red
^r   …   dark red
^B   …   bright blue
^b   …   dark blue
^G   …   bright green / lime
^g   …   green
^n   …   neutral - turns OFF the colour codes to stop bleeding.

This will be changed with a better system after accounts go in.

Screen grabs:

Mud colours

Mud colour code letters

To use a colour code simply type it in before the text you wish to appear in that colour and don't forget to end the text with the off colour code or everything else will also be in the colour you chose.

Title of ^CA^wckadia^n
gets you:
    Malachim of Ackadia

See also Description and Title

[Δ]

COMBINE

Used to Combine all the items in your inventory.
i.e. If "look in chest" responds :
a loaf
a loaf
a loaf
a water skin
a water skin

Combine will fix it so it reads:
[3] a loaf
[2] a water skin

( Also used to combine alike metals in forging. See WEAPONSMITHING )

[Δ]

COMPARE

compare object-1   object-2
compare object

COMPARE compares two objects in your inventory. If both objects are weapons, it will report the one with the better average damage. If both objects are armor, it will report the one with the better armor class.

COMPARE with one argument compares an object in your inventory to the object you are currently wearing or wielding of the same type.

COMPARE doesn't consider any special modifiers of the objects. I'm told however that Compare is nearly worthless on any mud.

[Δ]

CONDUCT

Rules to come. Suffice to say fools and trouble makers are neither wanted nor tolerated.
See also CORPSES (LOOTING) below. …

[Δ]

Copy

Used to copy scrolls.
Presumably requires a magic quill and a piece of parchment / spellbook

[Δ]

CORPSES
After (25) hours on the mud you are classed as a member.
Once classed as a member, besides voting rights, when your character dies, everything is left on his body. If you do not reclaim them before your body deteriorates to a skeleton (a few hours real time) then the next person to walk by is free to take any and all the items they find.

Garen answers 'Your corpse will rot at a random time, determined at the time you die, which is at least (15) minutes after you raise from the dead.'

Please note that the rule say you cannot loot player corpses - this is a rules violation. If you report it, it is investigated, and the person responsible will be deleted or put in jail.     So, don't take items from other players corpses unless you have express permission and if you find yours has been stripped clean report it immediately.

Taking from "mobs" - Goblins, Hobgoblins, Dragons etc - is fine though.

See also LOOTING

DAMAGE or injury

When one character attacks another, the severity of the damage is shown in the verb used in the damage message. I believe the following are all the damage messages are skill being reviewed so this is just an example.   Here are some real examples, though they may well change later…

You, or your opponent, will weaken and die depending for much hurt dealt:

Parmethius has a few scratches.

Malachim has a few bumps and bruises.

Malachim has quite a few wounds.

Malachim is bleeding quite a bit.

Malachim looks pretty hurt.

A scab covered, muscled goblin is in awful condition.

Dead (You hear a scab covered, muscled goblin's death cry.)

[Δ]

DATABASE

Usage:   Command  ( add | change | delete | list )   Player

Example:
Database add 1. Tyante
Database add dwarf Malachim
Database change Endrid Endryd
Database delete Bladrik
Database list

IT IS IMPORTANT YOU LEARN THIS ONE!
Your database is a record of who you know and allows you to join other groups, create tour own party or to follows another adventurer. Ask as add them to your database it becomes easier to follow or group with them and you will automatically recognise friends (or enemies) when you look in a room

[Δ]

DEAF

Usage:   Deaf

Toggles Deaf on and off, turning off all channels including OOC, Shouts, Yells, Tells etc, leaving just Says and Emotes.

[Δ]

DELETE

Used to delete your own character - think hard before you use!

The command is delete character password.
Then repeat command if your are really sure.
IMPORTANT : Use the password for you character, not your main account

[Δ]

DESCRIPTION

This is a very important, it's what how you describe yourself, what others see when they LOOK at you.

The spacing is also important, do not place spaces before or after color codes or those will so up as extra spaces in your text.

You can add colour codes at any time, but remember to close each line ( ^n ) otherwise the code bleeds to the next line.
This is especially important for the last line.

NOTE: With the introduction of accounts the old method for adding a description was ripped out…
At present we haven't added a replacement, but it is envisioned it will be done via the website and even offer the option to preview your work before submitting.

Hardly appropriate for a description, but good for my test, here's an ASCII art I edited in:

ascii art

(If you are wondering, it's an ASCII skeleton by JSS

[Δ]

EAT

Usage:   Eat  food

Example:
Eat bread

Obviously lets you eat.

Note for the future… if you eat spoiled food or strange fruits you will have a good chance of poisoning yourself. (Makes a saving throw).

Think real life - most fruits etc lying on the floor may be contaminated, and those juicy red berries…

[Δ]

EMIT

Usage:   Emit  string   "speech"

Example:
Emit Looking round, the Dwarf finds a dry rock to rest on, muttering, "Gods, I'm tired."

Used well with emote (and emotes) this can be a brilliant enhancement to roleplay.

[Δ]

EMOTE and EMOTES

Usage:   Emote(s)  string   "speech"

Example:
Emote rummages inside his backpack, tossing aside garments and stale food, muttering "Where's me oilstone?"
Emotes dirty laundry litters the floor.

Malachim rummages inside his backpack, tossing aside garments and stale food, muttering Where's me oilstone?

Malachim's dirty laundry litters the floor.

EMOTE
EMOTE is used to express emotions or actions, with out without speech… "YourName does this"

EMOTES, with the 'es' makes it subjective… "Yourname's action do this"

Besides EMOTE, there are several dozen built-in social commands, such as CACKLE, HUG, and THANK.

See SOCIALS below.   See also "memotes" : Movement emotes and "mpose" : Movement poses

[Δ]

ENTER - EXIT

Used to get into vehicles, also the enter certain concealed areas

To get into a coach, the command is enter vehicle   ie   Enter ferry   Enter carriage

To get out of the coach just type Exit coach

This applies for getting into other areas / things. For example, on Faerun there was an Orc camp that was accessible through a big log, the command being enter log.   Simply enough.

To look out of the windows on a coach as it moves type   look out

[Δ]

EQUIPMENT

Usage:  Equipment

Use eq, its faster. Lists all the equipment you are wearing.

Used to see items in a different view from the usual look. Examine will allow you to look at an object more closely and see more details.
Usage is examine item ie examine bread.

[Δ]

EXIT - ENTER

Used to exit a vehicle - ie Exit coach - see Enter above

[Δ]

EXITS

Usage:  Exits

EXITS shows you all available the exits and the room titles of the closest rooms in those directions.
Tells you the visible exits of the room you are in. Not all exits are may be visible.

You may, as the code develops be able to use the 'bump' technique to find hidden exits.
(Try to walk in a certain direction and see what you bump into).

Scan   direction   may be coded to show hidden / secret doors sometimes - if they are there.

[Δ]

EXPERIENCE & EXPERIENCE POINTS

This balance has yet to me decided for Arantha, but the general effect is kill mobs, get experience. Some classes with also get experience for other actions too. Needless to say the best experience comes from a well balanced group of adventurers.

See especially LEVELS

[Δ]

EXPIRE
Used to end your life and enter the Fugue plain for judgment by the Gods

Used

"When you are mortally wounded, type that and you're dead'"
"If you are at -hp and want to die fast"
"If you are turned to stone or unconscious"

[Δ]

[Δ]

FAMILIAR

See Also Teleport

The familiar command is used in conjunction with teleport. A wizard must be familiar with the place he is attempting to teleport to.

The more times a wizard visits a place, the more familiar he becomes with it, and therefore the safer his teleport will become. To boost your knowledge of a place, visit there and then type familiar.

[Δ]

FILL

Usage:   fill receptacle   or   fill receptacle source

Example:
Fill skin fountain

Objects that hold liquid usually use this command to be refilled, the most common being refilling your water skin after it has been emptied.

[Δ]

FISH

This allows a person to catch dinner from one of the docks or bridges.
You must have a Fishing pole to use this proficiency.

[Δ]

FLEE

Usage:  Flee

Flee! Run away (from combat) - if you can.
I tend to die a lot here, but you must be in Tactical Mode and be getting attacked.
You must also be next to an exit / wall. Even so, it doesn't always work and when it does some of the "mobs" or "mobiles" live up to their name by chasing you up the road, getting in free hits…

If the Mob hasn't attacked you yet you can escape by choosing a direction to run away in.

[Δ]

FOLLOW - GROUP

Usage:   Follow  ( mob | player | yourself)

Example:
Follow Exaar
Follow Horse
Follow Malachim

A VERY IMPORTANT SECTION! See also DATABASE

Follow target starts you following another character.

To stop following anyone else, Follow yourself. In my case it would be: Follow Malachim.

Nofollow stops everyone following you

Group character makes someone who is following you a member of your group. Group members share experience points from kills, as long as they are awake.

If the character is already a member of your group, then Group will kick out the character from your group. Characters can also leave your group by using a Follow command to stop following you.

Group with no argument shows statistics for each character in your group.

FUGUE, the

The 'Spirit World', the misty place you go when you die.

Newbies are spared this for their (25) hour initiation.

After that you face (1d6) game hours in the Fugue.
IC wise, you are dead, dearly departed, a mess on the forest floor…
Ideally you will roleplay wailing and lamenting to your deity for the chance of a resurrection - you never know they might even answer and give you the chance of some really interesting roleplay.

Whether or not, permanent death is not coded as such and you will awake cold, naked and battered in whatever Inn you last set as your BORN ROOM. You then have a finite time to get help to recover your body before it rots and all your equipment is free for the taking.

GEM APPRAISAL

This is a very good proficiency for Thieves and Mages who qualify for it.

It allows you to appraise those gems you may come across in a dragon's lair or during a Quest. A 500 gold piece diamond may look worthless to the untrained eye, but with gem appraising you can get the full amount of the gem when you sell it at the jewelers.

The command is appraise item ie appraise diamond or a diamond in short

GEMCUT

GEM CUTTING
This is a very good proficiency for Thieves and Mages who qualify for it.
This skill allows you to make a cut gem from uncut stones. Cut gems are much more valuable than uncut stones and can be sold to jewelers or other players. You will also need gem cutting tools and a gem workshop to use this skill.

You must be holding the stone and the tools and be in the room with the gem workshop.
Once you have the necessary components, the command to use this skill is gemcut stone.

HAND TO HAND FIGHTING

The hand to hand proficiency is one that is useful in certain combat situations. There is no command to use it, your character will use it when the situation arises.

This proficiency will be used when your character finds him or herself without another weapon. Usually when you are in combat and you have no weapon, fighting with your hands does very little damage. With this proficiency your character will be able to do more damage using just his or her hands. Of course the better you are with this proficiency the more damage you will be able to do with your hands. The only way to improve your skill is to use it more often.

I strongly recommend this for everyone!

HEAL

HORSE RIDING

Horse and mules are VERY EXPENSIVE*. However they will let you move though most terrains far faster than you normally would. Like most skills, get better with practise. Without the skill, you will continually fall off.

A horse or mule will rest when it's tired, you don't have to get off it, just make sure it's fed and watered
It will whinny if it is hungry or thirsty, but generally, when you rest, let it feed. If it doesn't eat or drink the food just pick it up again and move on.   To feed them, just lead them to a water trough or drop a skin for them, along with hay or grain.

To tie the horse to this post, walk to the post in tactical mode and type tie horse post. Your horse will then remain there until you untie it or someone else unties it. When you are ready to ride your horse simply type mount horse. You will climb onto the horse and all of your movement commands will work normally with you riding the horse until you fall off or dismount. You will fall off quite a bit when you are first learning, but once you have mastered staying on the horse you will need to know how to get off when you need to. Simply type dismount horse.

Stable your horse before you log off. If you don't it will die of starvation or be stolen.   This applies even if you log off sat on your horse.

* After the initial cost of the initial cost of the animal in the cost of the stables - (25) gold pieces every five (Real Life) days and the cost of food when you are out riding - perhaps 2 gold a day, depending on how far you travel.   Note also that the horse must be fed and watered before you return it to the stables.   Stabling costs include food, water, grooming etc.

You can now lead animals.

Usage is Lead animal for example Lead Mule or Lead Horse

To stop leading just type   Lead Related commands are:   LEAD   MOUNT   UNMOUNT   TIE

KEEP

Usage:   Keep  item

Example:
Keep backpack

NOTE: This is currently in test and subject to change. NOT live
May appear in the next copy over.

Keep sets a "Keep" flag on objects in your inventory so that to drop them you need to actually specify that object to drop.
ie "Drop all" won't drop these

Objects in your inventory which are flagged as being kept will be identified by a [K] or [Kept] in your inventory.

I believe re-entering the command will toggle it off again.

[Δ]

KILL

Usage:   Kill  target

Example:
Kill Goblin

Needs explaining..?

Once you have killed something a number of options become available.
You can look in corpse to see any gold etc
If they have any thing and use get all corpse to collect.

Lots of dead? Either sacrifice them and look in the next or use something like:
look in 2.corpse or look in Ogre

Then, if you have the butchering proficiency you can get corpse and butcher it. This can yield steaks etc from many creatures - these include deer, stags, Orcs…     These may spoil fast and/or need cooking so eat what you need and sacrifice the rest

Finally, you can sacrifice corpse or sacrifice meat if you butchered it.

For the sacrifice to work the target must be on the ground. If the Gods accept it, you may be rewarded.
The sacrifice factor may changed

Note, the command to kill players (PKILL's) has not been settled, but Murder player seems likely

LAG

This is the delay between typing a command and seeing its appear on screen.
It can be your friend on occasion, but it can also get you killed as the mobs are attacking…

It is caused by several factors…
Certain commands - like scan direction appear to cause a 10 second pause
The number of people / amount of activity in the m.u.d. MAY affect it, but if so this is rarely the cause
The quality of your own line / modem / ISP can affect this too.
Anything else is a global thing - I reckon, from watching, that when a lot of folk are grumbling about it they are all in the same continent or, on occasion aol using the same ISP…

LANGUAGE

Usage:   Language  ( available | new language )

Example:
Language
(Lang avail)
Lang Elven

The language(s) you can speak. This is relative to your race and Intelligence.
Proficiency slots may be used to increase the number of languages you can speak

Language on its own will list the languages you know and how well you speak them.

Language available gives you a list of languages that you can learn.
To change your current language to a different one you know type:   lang language

To LEARN a new language, you must go to a teacher and study

At present, like all proficiencies, you cannot learn new languages yet.

The names of languages are slowly being changed into their Arantha forms.
Common is now "Sharran," and gnomish is now "Nurmish."
There have been other additions (such as High Sharran), but those two are the only ones directly affecting players.

See Learn below

LEARN

Usage:   Learn  (skill | spell | proficiency )

Example:
Learn Fireball
Learn Cone
Learn 'Cone of Cold'
Learn Weaponsmithing *
Learn Elven *

* (Sept 2004) Languages and proficiencies aren't in yet, coming soon

Use 'Train' for weapon skills.

To learn new proficiencies on Arantha the player may have to go to a teacher for that skill.
For weapon proficiencies that would be the town's weapon master.
To learn a new language, it may be the headmaster at the local language school.
To learn a new cleric spell, it would be a suitable temple
To learn a new magic spell, it would the master at a wizards school - OR the mage you apprentice under

Each teacher will require a fee and each proficiency will take up a certain number of slots, to find the specific number for a specific skill, look it up in the PHB….
It is likely we will use a related list here, once formalised.

I'm come back to thief skills are they are being coded this month…
This is the old method and probably doesn't work!
Certain skills needs points distributing or more points to one you already have.

When there you type:

learn   thief   'skill of your choice'   # of points   for example : Learn thief 'move silently' 25

To check on your skills type score 2, and this will show what you have.

[Δ]

LEVELS & EXPERIENCE

Levels
When you gain enough experience points you will move up another level. This is based on the levels in D&D with the same restrictions and requirements. For anyone who is unfamiliar with this that means that the amount of experience points to gain another level varies according to what class the player is and their attributes. Also going from level one to level two will require much less experience points than going from level two to level three. Moving up a level will change a lot of things for your character. Hitpoints and movement points will often be increased and your character may gain slots for extra proficiencies. For mages and priests going up a level sometimes means that a new spell level is gained, these are again based on the D&D system. A new spell level means additional and more powerful spells/prayers.

At level 3:

At level 4:

At level 10:

Here's a typical response:

[Price] Item
[ 2 sp] a small net.
[ 1 sp] a water skin.
[ 2 sp] a large basket.
[ 1 gp] a small chest.
[ 7 sp] an average net.

[ 7 sp] a flint and steel.
[ 2 sp] a mixture of grains.
[ 15 sp] a bale of hay.
[ 1 cp] a small inked quill.

For the record: 10cp = 1sp   /   10sp = 1gp   /   5gp = 1pp     (Copper, Gold & Platinum Pieces)

LISTEN

This is used with the class related proficiency Detect Noise

Syntax, is listen   or   listen direction

[Δ]

LITERACY

There are a few commands to use with literacy and a few restrictions to note. The first command is read. Use this command to read anything written in Arantha. So, to read a note type read note name or note number. Go to the noteboards/note page for more information on using noteboards. You will be unable to read anything written in a language you do not know. Also, if you are attempting to read a magically written item, you will not be able to read it unless you know and cast the spell read magic.

This is used to write a document.
So, if you wish to create a note of your own, you would use the notepad to compose your message and then type write paste. You must be able to understand the language you wish to write in as well. If your literacy skill is poor you will find it difficult to read many things and anything you write while your skill is poor will be illegible.

Requires parchment paper and a quill.

It is even possible to pen a book, just write parchments and put them in books as each page.
A page on parchment holds 22 lines and:
60 characters were line if you are writing to parchment
or 72 if your are posting a note.

Question : How do I read form a book? Every time I try it tells me "a leather bound book is lying here" '

Try   look in book
Or, these books are made to hold parchments and (I think) you have to take the pages out
Get Parchment Book

Lock - unlock

Some objects and doors have locks and only someone with the key can lock or unlock those items.

Syntax: lock object or lock direction The reverse obviously being - unlock object or unlock direction

To lock a door type lock west for a door to the west of you.   or   lock chest to lock a chest with a lock on it.

Locking - install new…

Install lock   direction   -   - You MUST be outside the room to do this. When you have installed the lock you have to get a new key from the realtors.
Note, for rooms, if the rent runs out, the lock reverts to the standard variety - the realtor changes the locks and sells the better one Smiley Smile!

or, for chests - Install lock   target

LOOK

Usage:   Look  ( target | in object | on object | direction )

Example:
Look Dwarf
Look 2.
Look west
Look in 3.corpse
Look sword
Look in purse
Look on table
Objects resting on top of a heavy, oaken table:
      a double-bladed axe with a leather-wrapped haft
      a bronze lantern

Used to look in, on, or at something or to glance around. A response to LOOK after a battle might be:

[Exits: east west]
A steaming pile of a bullywug's entrails is lying here.
The corpse of a bullywug is lying here.

Looking IN a chest will list the items inside and looking at a person will give a description of them
Looking ON a table will list the items lying on top of the table.

(If you recall "look in backpack.c" this isn't used here. Works OK without it so far)

LOOTING CORPSES

After (25) hours on the mud you are classed as a member.     Once classed as a member, besides voting rights, when your character dies, everything is left on his body. If you do not reclaim them before your body deteriorates to a skeleton (a few hours real time) then the next person to walk by is free to take any and all the items they find.

MAGIC ITEMS

Don't be tacky!
This is an In Character MUD and enchanted items are really hard to get, don't show yourself up my asking for them outright!

Asking - In Character - "Ye know where I might obtain a bag of holding?"   is acceptable.

Asking for a magic long sword +1 will get you the derision you richly deserve!   Besides, they are very rare!

HOWEVER if you have enough RP points you can ask an Immortal (via a fsc) for a personal quest or PQUEST and gain one that way. The power of the item is relative to the number of RP points used. As an example, enchanted armour would cost "A LOT" of RP points.   Also, unless things has changed while a pquest MAY get you a magic item, there is no guaranteed it would be the one you asked for…

Incidentally, as far as I am aware, Gauntlet of Ogre Strength are no longer allowed as an option.

For the record a Magic Sword is +1 to hit, +1 to damage

MELT

Used with WEAPONSMITH NWP in forging swords etc.
