« Gems and semi precious stones in a fantasy setting »

Faerun stones, by base value

The values herein are for cut and uncut gems as found and appraised by expert jewellers around the Sword Coast, though f' the most part, we've left aside hardstones, shells n' the like. Ideally ye would have another two or two such experts t'gether to guarantee the best possibly price for the creations Dumathoin lets ye take from his realm.

The prices ye can expect can vary quite a bit depending on the quality of the gem afore and after it be cut, and the judgement of the jeweller appraising and cutting ye stones to shape. Any master worth his or her salt will know if their judgement seems awry and seek a second opinion as to the value. This is moreso for the rarer gems, but remember also that the rarest jewels can be flawed throughout and that even master craftsmen have the odd bad day…

The values herein are the generally accepted categories to base prices of gems and fancy stones as appraised by expert jewellers around Faerun*. It takes no account of flawed or outstanding examples of lapidiary artwork, nor overly large or tiny specimens either....

Even allowing into account the size of the jewel in question, gems can be worth much more - or much less - than their base value. Mayhaps this be because of noticable imperfections or yet it be a particularly slendid and well faceted cut. Be ye also aware that gems that can be used for creating magical items or for casting spells may have both economic and commoditity values.

Malachim Grimbane, Crusader of Dumathoin and Linah Enverse, Moon Shard of Selune

(* Faerun mud became Rauvyon, which closed a while back, then restarted a year or so later. I however, can now be found in the Arantha MUD)
