« Learning to speak other languages »

Introduction

As a child one of my aims was to learn at least seven languages and I long since passed that… OK, I cheated, most of the 'languages' I know are programming ones, but I have learnt a smattering of several European ones too. At various points, either though home study or college courses, I've taken several languages, including French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. Needless to say I've forgotten almost all of it over the years, but when my children start learning languages at school I'll do it with them. Can't hurt, eh.

Sooner or later I intend to be truly fluent in French and Spanish at the very least. Anything else is a bonus

At present, when I remember at any rate, I am listening to languages tapes, French radio over the Internet and watching subtitled DVD's dubbed into French. This is actually a great way to learn a language. The fact I'm invariably typing or reading computers books isn't helping my own retention rate, but Erin is starting to pick it up at least.

This page is in anticipation of the children taking languages at senior school and offers links and pointers to resources on translating and learning foreign languages. It will be slowly expanded over time. It will also be a pointer resource for webmasters looking to have their sites translated - either cheaply or professionally.
