Introduction

Note:
Most, but not all rare items may be obtained from salvage. The chances are small with an expert kit, virtually impossible with a standard kit. I have listed them for you to try and can't speak about the drop rates until I take the time to test them exhaustively. Similarly with those hostile creatures that drop them, they are 'rare' and by definition will not drop often.

As a rule of thumb guide, anything that drops iron, can provide steel, if you are lucky. A white item worth 100 gold is, I believe, rather more likely to give steel than a plain sword worth 3 gold. Albeit it unintentional, you are may well see rare items when you are trying to salvage something valuable from a purple or gold item and it fails. (Need to keep logs and see).

Salvage Kit (25 uses)
Used to break down items into common components - i.e. iron iron and wood
Note that items don't need to be identified first to be salvaged.

Expert Salvage Kit (25 uses)
Used to salvage common and rare craft materials, upgrade components and runes from items. ie a staff wrapping with +28 health or a rune from a Char hide.

Superior Salvage Kit (100 uses)
Also used to salvage common and rare craft materials, upgrade components and runes from items.
Note:
Despite the sizable price premium over a standard 'expert salvage kit' this superior one gives absolutely no added bonus beyond that of convenience. Looks good in your inventory though, I think.

Amber Chunk

This isn't technically true as Amber Chunks can be salvaged from Amber weapons while Jadeite Shards can be salvaged from Jade weapons. Its irritatingly rare though (and I find it almost only ever happens when the weapon has the "Highly Salvagable" label).
