What's in a (domain) name?

The more memorable your name, the more likely people with visit your website.
The more people genuinely visit your website, the more valuable your domain...

Think "The Beetles". Hmmm. Apple label...Applemania ? Let me see...
Strangely enough, it's a Seattle based singing telegram company, but you get the idea.

Naturally, all the really great names have gone, though I just registered a rather snappy Magnowear for a company that wants to sell those homepathetic bangles and clothes with magnets inside. Anyhow, there are a few name generators that will let you enter a few words and use them to come up with ideas, simultaneously checking if the are free or not.

Can't think of a good name for your business ? Try these generators for idea:

NameBoy - I like this one a lot!
Two fields for input and generates a greatbreak range.
Covers: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .tv, .cc and .us

DotWay - also good
Two fields only, but a good generator.
Covers: .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us

AllDomainUSA Three fields for company, product, secondary option.
Covers .com, .net and .org

People have got VERY rich selling classic domain names...

its a long term vision with .tv i ended up getting fish.tv after all! i was really lucky. fish.com sold for over 1,000,000 so in my opinion its worth 50,000 - 100,000 to right buyer within the next 5 years given whats happening with internet television and it gets good traffic. but i could be wrong as well but given all the research i do, i am reasonably confident of turning a profit one day.

cheers

The Insider's Guide To Domain Name Speculation   ~ By Lee Hodgson
For $47 this ebook does sound very interesting. If you are clever as thinking up great names you could make a living at it. Certainly folk do. Here's a quote from the Domain Guru website:

"In the first part of this two part article, I challenged 15 domain appraisal firms to put a dollar value on one domain name, liquidtrading.com. Their valuations ranged from $200 to $160,000. In the second and final part of this article, I will suggest some ways in which appraisal firms might look to improve their appraisals, so that one name does not support such a dramatic range of valuations."

That said, there are some exceptionally good specialist forums like: NamesPro

A few tardy programming hiccups aside, this is a fascinating site as it lists domains for sales, giving the intial and current price.
