World of Warcraft Herbs: Notes for the Apprentice

The figures below (in brackets) are in the orange picking range. As a rule of thumb, add 25 points for it to turn from yellow to green and a further 50 for it to finally turn grey.
For example, Peacebloom is orange at 1, yellow by 25, green by 50 and finally grey at 100 Herbalism.

It should be noted that the release of Wrath and the new Insciption profession will greatly enhance the value of and competition for herbs in all areas. For myself I have a minimum of 8 stacks of every herb banked and am aiming for at least 15 stacks of all herbs and 20 or most stacks for those I'll need most.

The comments on Milling are subject to change when Wrath ships but will give a good guide in advance. Originally I thought it was combining five different herbs per ink, but it now turns out that it's five of any given herb. Works a bit like Prospecting on ores, were each milling producing 1-4 common pigments, or an uncommon pigment on rare occasions. Personally, hedging bets, I'm gathering masses of everything, just to be sure.

Apprentice Herbalist: 1 to 75

Peacebloom (1 to 25)
Peacebloom favours open grassy areas and is common in all starter and low level areas.

Used mostly for minor healing potions at low levels.

Milling for Inscriptions can give: (Alabaster Pigment)

Silverleaf (1 to 25)
Silverleaf tends grow be near trees and is also common in all starter and low level areas.

Used in several minor potions at low levels.

Milling for Inscriptions can give: (Alabaster Pigment)

Bloodthistle (1 to 25)
Bloodthistle only occurs in the Blood Elf starter area of Eversong Woods and it usually found near the walls of building etc.

They have no use beyond giving Blood Elf casters a small buff (and defuff).
They are said to be used for Inscriptions is Wrath, but I'm rather dubious about that.

Milling for Inscriptions can give: (Nothing, this probably cannot be milled.)

Earthroot (15 to 40)
Common to all starter and low level areas, you will find these nestled into rocky areas, usually at the base of cliffs and walls or the tops of ravines.

Used in a few low level potions, such as Minor Fortitude and Lion's Strength.
Also used in the Elixir of Ogre's Strength, which is is used in one or two jewelcrafting and blacksmith recipes.

Milling for Inscriptions can give: (Alabaster Pigment)

Mageroyal (50 to 75)
Like peacebloom, these favour open ground and can be found throughout most low level (10 to 20) zones such the Westfall, Wetlands, though The Barrens seems to have the largest concentration by far.

[Swiftthistle] can also be found when gathering these.

Mostly used for lesser mana potion and, more so, the Elixir of Wisdom which is needed by leather workers for the Hillman's Belt. Also used in the rare Delicious Chocolate Cake recipe.

Milling for Inscriptions can give: (Dusky Pigment, Verdant Pigment)

Swiftthistle (-)
Swiftthistle is sometimes found when gathering Mageroyal and Briarthorn.

Mainly used for the Elixir of Lesser Agility - itself used by Leatherworkers for Dark Leather Shoulders) and by Rogues for the energy restoring Thistle Tea cooking recipe. It is also used for the grossly under-rated Swiftness Potion (increases run speed by 50% for 15 sec). That said, I usually forget to drink this when I most need it myself! Blacksmiths sometimes need the Swiftness Potion to make a Deadly Bronze Poniard.

Milling for Inscriptions can give: (Dusky Pigment, Verdant Pigment)

Briarthorn (70 to 95)
Growing at the base of large plants and trees, this can be found in all over the low level zones, including Westfall, Darkshore and, notably, The Barrens.

[Swiftthistle] can also be found when gathering these.

Mostly used for the Lesser Healing and Healing Potion, it is also used in the Elixir of Wisdom and Swiftness Potion, mentioned above.

Milling for Inscriptions can give: (Dusky Pigment, Verdant Pigment)
