Socketing cut gems to your armour and weapons
[Δ]
Here's how:
To socket a gem use Shift Right Click on the item to bring up the socketing window. If you forget the how just hover your mouse of the item and you will see the reminder at the bottom of the items description.
Be aware that socketing is permanent in that you can never recover the gem once set, however you can replace (overwrite) it at any time with another one by simply re-socketing it with another.
As a very rough rule of thumb, uncommon gems average 4g, rare gems 40g and epic ones 400g
Personally I think it would be great - and rather appropriate - if Jewelcrafter's could remove (un-socket) gems from their own equipment, but that wish is for another day.
On the matter of matching gems to sockets it is not essential, as any colored gem will fit into a socket of any color. Pairing up gems to sockets will active a given items 'Socket Bonus' but it can often be the case that mis-matched stones other greater benefits.
It would be wasted on the blue gloves shown but I could, for example, have fitted red gems like Don Julio's Heart and a Runed Crimson Spinel, sacrificing the 3 spell critical 'socket bonus' for 26 bonus spell damage and healing.
Note however that this is not the case with meta-gems. For those to activate the number and combination of socketed gems in all your equipped items must match the requirement of it, or it might as well not be there!
Eye-opener:
Apparently (unconfirmed), As of patch 3.0.1, Blacksmiths will be able to permanently place an (additional) socket on a one-handed weapon.
I presume, if so, this is in leu of / overwrites existing enchants or mods like chains.
